THAT'S A MIRACLE
Amazing things happen every day! If we were truly cognizant of them, if we were keeping a keen eye to see beyond the ordinary, we’d be greatly encouraged and not so filled up with negativity which seems to flood our lives all too often. How about a little laughter and joy once in awhile instead of sweating all the hard stuff that is surely part of life? Jesus plainly said we’d have tribulations. [John 16:33] Everybody’s got ‘stuff’ going on in one way or the other. So what are we going to do with the ‘stuff’ that’s sucking the life right out us? Are we going to whine or win?
Can I suggest something? Let’s begin to look around us and pray that our eyes and hearts be open to seeing the goodness of God Most High. He’s in every corner of our lives, if we would just let Him into it. Can we just get beyond ourselves - our own little world, our own needs, wants, demands, expectations and give Him a ‘thank and praise offering’ simply because of WHO HE IS?! He is worthy of praise at all times, through all things, in all situations at all hours of the day and night because He rules and reigns over all the earth. “…So that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” [1 Pet. 4:11d]
Recently, my husband and I were watching a couple of our grand kids and our 3 year old grandson was watching the pre-Olympic tryouts. It was so interesting watching those on snowboards doing all kinds of flips in the air before landing on the slanted slopes. All of a sudden he shouted out with great excitement: “That’s a miracle! That’s a miracle!” In his eyes and heart, he was seeing something that looked utterly impossible as these guys soared through midair! I didn’t even know he knew the ‘word’ miracle! But obviously he’s heard it somewhere and knew exactly what it meant. Bless his beautiful heart!
Truly, there are amazing things happening all around us. But many times, we’re simply not aware. Oftentimes, we’re whining and not winning because our focus is way off. Some may be too concerned for their own selves, not loving, serving or worshipping God Most High as the First Commandment bids us. He’s HIGH all right! He’s higher than any mountain we can or cannot see. He’s higher than all our questions, higher than all the gravity this world has to offer. He “upholds all things by the Word of His power.” [Heb. 1:3]
Our problems here in this life will not last forever, but what we’re doing with it will determine the next life, which is forever. That’s the one we should focus on. It’s not ‘now or never,’ because you and I still have this moment in time to choose what to do with our life. It’s actually a ‘now and forever’ situation. We can choose right now, while we still have breath on this side of the veil that divides the natural from the supernatural - which is heaven, so let’s take hold of Hebrews 4:7, “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” What we give our lives and efforts to right now, today – determines the eternal days we’ll have in one place or the other, heaven or hell. Choose wisely! Focus wisely!
There’s an interesting passage in chapter 4 of the book of Daniel about a king who thought the world revolved around him. But he was humbled in a number of ways groveling with the animals for food, grazing and eating with the cattle; even his hair became matted and grew out of control; his fingernails became like those of ‘bird’s claws.’ We would assume he wasn’t too attractive anymore! But the Lord used the prophet Daniel to declare to him, “…seven periods of time will pass over you until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind…and after you recognize that it is Heaven that rules...” (My emphasis) Guess what? The king got it! It may have taken awhile through ‘seven periods of time, but he finally got it! His awakening to what really mattered in life, was, in itself a miracle! Every ‘born again’ soul who comes to the Lord with all their heart, all their strength, all their mind, begins to understand the true miracle of ‘rebirth’ in Christ. Focus is immediately changed as it was with King Nebuchadnezzar. When a soul recognizes the innate need for His Creator God, humbles himself before Him, asks Him into their heart and begins to love and serve Him, their focus is forever changed. Thus one becomes much more aware of the miraculous!
Change your vision
Oh to be like our little grandson, who saw immediately the thrill, the joy, and the rewards of ‘miraculous living.’ Life certainly is not easy. It has its sorrows to be sure, just as Jesus said it would and indeed does. But that’s not to say wonderful things are not transpiring right before our very eyes, because they are! We’re just not always aware or even looking for the good. I believe the birth of a human being is beautiful. I think the spectacular blazing array of colors in the skies at sunrise and sunset can simply be breathtaking, especially as seen over a mountain, or ocean, or simply in your backyard. A red cardinal bird against the backdrop of a snow covered tree is so beautiful. As they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” We must learn to behold!
So what about having clothes on your back? What about a roof over your head? What about having a true, close friend? What about having all your fingers, your two hands, your legs, being able to feed yourself? Think about what YOU can thank and praise God for. No doubt there are more than you can count! Sometimes it’s as the old saying goes, ‘It’s the small things that count.’ Something indeed, to ponder.
But what we need to know and live to the fullest is that even if you don’t have those things…there is always and will always be, something to give God glory for – if it’s only just to have His divine Presence in your life…even if it’s for Him that you sit in a prison, three stories below the earth, for 14 years, never seeing daylight, as did Richard Wurmbrand – a living martyr for Christ. [He began the organization called Voice of the Martyrs] He writes in his book, ‘Tortured for Christ,’ that he still had something no one could take away from him – Jesus! And for that, He gave glory! And just having a sip of cold water is amazing when you think how, in some cities, people have had to go without it because of chemical leaks, storms, etc. In Matthew 10:42, Jesus encourages us with these words: “And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.”
O, the beauty of God even in simple things! Scripture tells us that unless we become as a little child (trusting innocently as they do, being delighted in small things) we cannot enter the kingdom of God. [Matt. 18:3-4] Precious people, sometimes it just means seeing through the eyes of an innocent child, like our little grandson, to see the miracles. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His Name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” [John 1:12-13] It’s time to come home. It’s time to walk in the miraculous. It changes everything!
