INTIMACY WITH GOD JOURNAL

Linda on a picnic with Michael at Saylorville Lake
THE JOY OF THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH
June is my birthday month and it’s such a beautiful time of year! Everything is in full bloom and it’s a joy to be outdoors after the cold Iowa winter. In the above picture, my husband Michael and I were having a two-some with a private little picnic in a beautiful spot overlooking Saylorville Lake, one of our favorite places to take his Vespa for a ride and picnic. Wish he had been in the picture. This was taken before I lost my hair due to my fight with cancer. I can’t believe how different I look with no hair! But at least I’m still here giving praise and glory to God for all His tender mercies toward me. How about you? What battles have you been facing And are you still giving God glory for holding you in the palm of His hands? I pray it is so with you. No one says it’s an easy thing to do. Nevertheless, the Lord God Almighty deserves all glory, honor and praise no matter what one is going through simply because of WHO HE IS!
I want to encourage you to find joy in your life. Everyone has ‘stuff’ they’re going through. It may be the testing within your marriage, or a wayward child, a sick grandchild, your own illness, a financial need, a job situation. Whatever it might be that is trying your soul to the core, lift up your mind and heart to Him who is always worthy of all praise forever and ever.
I love picnics because it’s so fun to be under the canopy of the open skies and fresh air. All table formalities are unnecessary as we relax and enjoy one another in a simple setting of picnic gear and having family gatherings either lakeside or somewhere in a park.
But I want to put forth another fresh idea for you! Have you ever thought about going on a picnic with the Lord, just the two of you? I challenged a group of people a number of years ago to do that very thing as I passed out bottles of bubbles for my June birthday celebration. I told them to take the bottle of bubbles home and in the next week to just go find a private place to be alone with the Lord and enjoy His company blowing bubbles like a little kid!
Enjoy your God
As children of God, I think it’s important to be a bit ‘child-like’ sometimes in our spirit instead of trying to be all grown up and thinking we have all the answers. Being dependent upon our heavenly Father brings great comfort and relief from the stresses of life. And did you know that He enjoys YOU?! In the Old Testament book, Song of Songs, it speaks very clearly of His delight over us. He longs for you and I more than we long for Him.
One night as I was deep in intercession praying for everything under the sun, I heard the Lord say to me, “Why don’t you just sit down and enjoy ME for awhile?!” Wow, what an idea! It’s not novel, but it sure was fresh with me in that moment. That’s when I had the idea of blowing bubbles and just having fun with my heavenly Father and decided to give them out at a meeting that night. I felt so strongly the Lord’s Presence and power in that divine invitation to just come and enjoy Him. It seems we make life so difficult at times, when we should be running into His divine arms of love and comfort where everything else loses its grip within us.
Take note of what Psalm 16:11 says: “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your Presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” Now that’s comforting and powerful! These kinds of verses are throughout the Word of God. There are just too many to include in this journal, but it might be worth a ‘word study’ on your part to bring greater strength to your soul. Nehemiah 8:10b is another favorite of mine which says, “Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” I feel this is one aspect of my health journey that has kept me strong, positive, and upbeat. I move onward and upward giving praise, honor and glory to the Lord living each day with His joy in my heart. Folks, the world doesn’t give out a lot of joy. There’s a lot of sadness out there. Life’s depth, purpose and sustaining walk in victory is only found in the joy of the Lord. Isn’t it time to enjoy Him?!
Lessons in the bubbles
I have gleaned about seven different interpretations of this fun gesture of blowing bubbles
before the Lord like a little girl on a picnic blanket. For one thing, those bubbles burst pretty quickly. What this suggests is that the things of this earth are very fleeting compared to eternity. When you die, you can’t take anything of this world with you except your love for the Lord which lasts forever in fellowship with Him in heaven. What a wonderful thought! That atmosphere of heaven is never ending and has beauty far beyond our imagination. It will be so exciting!
The second thing I see in blowing these wonderful little bubbles is that they are fragile and beautiful. The Lord is kind, gentle and loving and He knows how fragile we are. Thus He takes us in His arms and teaches us tenderly the things about life through His written Word. It’s amazing that He loved us while we were yet sinners. [Rom. 5:8] He has seen us from all eternity from the moment that we gave our lives to Him after our confessions and He declares in Song of Songs 4:7, “You are altogether beautiful my darling, and there is no blemish in you.” Now that ought to make your day!
The third thing in those bubbles is observing how easily they float. Life is so much easier with the Lord Jesus in it. Did He promise us a ‘Rose Garden’ as the old song says? No, and yes! NO, in the sense that He said in John 16:33 that we’d have tribulation, trials, tests, but to take courage because He has overcome the world. Following Him , you and I become natural overcomers. And YES, He did promise us a Rose Garden, for He is the sweet Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the valleys. Songs of Songs 2:1. Having Him in our life means there will be the sweet fragrance of His Spirit all around us, and extravagant bouquets of blessings can be ours!
Enjoy your God
Another fun aspect in regard to these bubbles is that they are whimsical and capricious, meaning they are unpredictable. Sometimes a ‘child’ of God just has to stop striving so hard in all the matters of life, and let go of our clenched fists. We need to flow and go with the Lord letting Him have full reign to lead us where we really need to go. It has no bearing on whether you totally understand or not. Trust is the key. There are so many scriptures about trusting in the Lord. Proverbs 3:5 is well known: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” Verse 8 is one I’ve had to cling to as I’ve gone through my day to day battle with cancer. It says, “It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.” Therein lies an important key. There comes a point where you just can’t carry all your burdens and you’ve simply got to let go and begin to enjoy life with God! Let go, and let God! The Christian walk ought to be a happy walk. The world will not want what we have if we’re not content with His Presence.
The fifth aspect of these whimsical bubbles on your picnic is that you can see the prism within each bubble as the sunlight catches them. So let the Son of God shine in you! Those prisms are tiny little rainbows and they remind us of God’s covenant, His promises to us as when He first placed the rainbow in the skies after Noah’s Ark came to ‘rest.’ [Genesis 9] Be at rest knowing the Lord fulfills His promises. What He says, He does. “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” [Numb. 23:19]
Certainly you have noticed when you blow those bubbles that some are larger and some are smaller. It’s imperative that we seek, all the days of our life, to grow and expound in our knowledge of God and in our personal relationship with Him. We are called to higher ground as we continue our earthly journey but with heaven’s glory in mind. We must aspire to go from glory to glory in our walk and relationship with the Lord. 2 Corinthians attests to this saying: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” What a wonderful promise!
And the final thing that I see in these wonderful little bubbles is that they float on air, the wind, or the breeze whichever way it is flowing it is going. Go with the flow of God, His will and His ways, and you will always end up in good places! But we must understand that our walk with Him is propelled not by any real efforts of our own, but simply by complete submission to His will and the power of the Holy Spirit. You don’t carry yourself. He carries you! Zechariah 3:6-7 has an astounding call in it when it says: “And the angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If you will walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also govern My house and also have charge of My courts, and I will grant you free access among these who are standing here.’” What could be better than knowing and seeing the heights of heaven’s glory in this manner?!
So with all this in mind, I commission you all to enjoy your summer with the Lord God Most High. It just might change your life beyond your wildest expectations!
