Any opinions on today’s fashion scene? I’m not talking syles, but something more significant. It’s the nearly bare nakedness of bodies shown in today’s fashions for both men and women. I only saw a portion of the Academy Awards and other shows of that nature and was still appalled that one MC of an event (a guy) came on stage in only his underwear. And our kids are watching this stuff?! Just when I think I can’t be shocked anymore – I am! Of course we know the world will follow the beat of it’s own drum, but as followers of Christ we are not to be conformed to the ways of the world. Most certainly, people of God should set the example for proper dress. But that isn’t always the case. Far too many in our Christian circles wear inappropriate clothing, revealing too much flesh just because it’s the ‘fashion’ of the day. Precious people of God, know this - one can dress fashionably without compromise!
I’ve heard of a program called, Fashion Police. I’ve only caught glimpses of it where a panel of people critique the clothing of the Hollywood stars. But it’s more about what color flatters them or whatever looks good or bad on someone not necessarily if it’s proper or not. There certainly isn’t any critiqueing of the tremendous liberties taken to expose so much of their bodies. But when we become a believer, it’s not just our conduct that ought to change, it’s how we dress! We must remember there is One alone who sees the heart, the motives of one’s behavior, and that is our Wonderful Lord. He calls us to purity and holiness again and again throughout His Divine Word. Job says in 29:14, “I put on righteousness and it clothed me.” Isaiah 61:10 says, “For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness.” Let us remember these things when we’re getting ready for the day because what we physically wear speaks just as loud as our words!
2 Peter 3:11 says it this way: “Since all these things are to be destroyed [the world] in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness.” There you have it! What kind of people ought we to be? Certainly we are to convey a holiness of God’s Presence in our lives that distinguishes us from worldly ways. Our Savior asks us to put on His righteousness. We are called to put on proper clothing. Put on holiness. Put on godliness, even if no one else in the office does, or anywhere else for that matter within your sphere of influence, especially in church, as Jesus admonishes us: “You, follow Me!” John 21:22. [My emphasis] Clothe yourself properly and righteously, giving no leeway for anything else.
Perspire or Inspire?
I get a number of Christian magazines each month and lately the theme seems to be the same: ‘ Whatever happened to holiness and purity?’ It’s been stated that over half our children [6 in 10] are being raised without traditional family values. The battle for the true bride of Christ and those sacred values are now front and center with the Supreme Court of the land about to rule on whether marriage should remain between a man and woman. Our society has seen a decline in moral character faster than any other generation, as one of these magazines states. Most believers are aware of how dark the world is becoming and it can actually make you perspire thinking of all the horrid things going on around the world with ISIS and their autrocities. Certainly scripture warns us plainly of the chaos coming upon the world at the End of the Age whenever that time frame might be. But until then, we are always called to be pure, holy and distinct from the world. We are called to inspire those around us to walk with God and be holy as He is holy. We are to be ‘in the world, but not of it.’ [John 17:14-19] Proper language and proper dress certainly contribute to a testimony for Jesus. Foul words, foul actions, even wearing a skirt too high, a blouse too low, clothes worn skin tight, etc. all these may contaminate the ears and eyes of those around us, especially our vulnerable children.
Scripture speaks of the compromise at the End of the Age and how many people simply will not adhere to sound teachings or doctrines. Many have already begun to make up their own Bibles to say what they want it to say. Sacriligious things will take place more and more, even within the Christian Community because of a ‘watering down’ of God’s Truth in His Holy Word. Beware. Take notice. We must live our lives holy unto God in every sense of the Word not compromising one iota of scripture!
God’s Word from 2 Timothy 3:1-5 warns: “But realize this, that in the last days, difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, concedited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied it’s power...Vs 7 - always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth…Vs. 8 - men of depraved mind.” [My emphasis] Let none of us be found in the category of having a depraved mind!
In Timothy’s 1st book, 4:1-3 he gives this warning as well: “But the Spirit expicitly says that in the latter times, some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron…” Verse 7b of this same chapter says, “On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily disciple is only of little profit, but godliness IS profitable for ALL things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” [My emphasis] We dress for the life to come! We dress for success in the sense of being covered in godliness that will lead to Eternal Life. This earth isn’t all there is. There is more, so much more! Eternal glory awaits all those who bow, bend and serve the Lord Jesus Christ who saved them from decrepancy of mind, body and spirit. In the life of the believer, there is no room for lukewarmness or compromise. It’s all in, or it’s all out. [Rev. 3:16]
Our heavenly wardrobe
Dressing for success for our eternal home involves clothing ourselves with:
- Salvation, Ps. 61:10
- The Lord Jesus, Rom. 13:14
- Splendor, Ps. 45:3
- Strength and Dignity , Isa. 52:1 & Prv. 31:25
- Compassion, Col. 3:12
- Humility, 1 Peter 5:5
- Gladness & Praise, Isa. 61:3
- Power, Luke 24:49
- Righteousness, Job29:14
- And finally see how 1 Chron. 16:29 states it: “Yes, ascribe to the Lord the glory due His Name! Bring an offering and come before Him; Worship the Lord when clothed with holiness.” Another version says at the end, “Worship the Lord in holy splendor.” Wow!
And certainly all of God’s Word is a holy covering for a lifetime of godly, eternal success!
INFO ON HERMITAGES
It has come to my attention that some of you may not be familiar with what a hermitage is. And that’s understandable since I really don’t know of any other ministry that offers this particular kind experince and journey with the Lord. So briefly, because I think I could write a book about it, years ago I was struck in my spirit about how often the New Testament speaks of Jesus ‘going away to be alone with the Father.’ I thought that if He needed to do that, then most certainly I needed it even more! I found this also in the Old Testament with many of the prophets, etc. With that in mind, I went on my own personal week long hermitage about 23 years ago and on the way home the Lord told me to offer this kind of experience to others. I take the women on these amazing journeys while my husband offers similar trips for men.
There are no Bible studies, no casual gathering together because a hermitage affords you time alone with the Lord away from everyone and every distraction. That time is very sacred and very guarded. It’s a cherished time alone with God – just you and Him, resting, relaxing, listening to His every heartbeat in an atmosphere of silence and solitude. A Sabbath Service is conducted at the conclusion with the washing of one another’s feet in grace, humility and love and also partaking of a very intimate time of Holy Communion. It’s at this service that many amazing things take place!
We go to a place in Minnesota in the woods where each ‘hermit’ has their own one-room cabin with an attached screened-in porch. It’s quite cozy, quaint and well equipped. Deer quite often walk by. A lake is nearby with walking trails for exercise and reflection. This holy journey is 3 nights and 4 days. A very detailed letter with more information is sent to those who sign up. If you long for deeper intimacy with God, this experience is for you!
