WINDS OF CHANGE
As you can see from the picture above, the winds were strong this particular day we were on the beach in Carmel, California recently. Here in Iowa where we live, it always seems the month of March is windy, which translates to the change of seasons where spring is just around the corner. It wasn’t but a few days ago that the winds here were quite strong and we broke an old record for a high temperature by three degrees! It was a balmy 71 which felt absolutely wonderful considering there is usually snow on the ground this time of year. I’m sharing this as I’ve been sensing there is significant change coming not only in our country with the upcoming presidential elections, but to the world itself with all the threats of terrorism, global warming, etc., but that there is also a great shift coming in the church, the Body of Christ worldwide. Many of us are sensing the spiritual currents of change and that the church of Jesus Christ is rising up to become a more powerful instrument for the Lord in this precarious day and age with signs, wonders, miracles, and the awe of God falling like rain! Oh yes indeed, the winds of change are blowing and their velocity is increasing! Do you sense it?
I believe we are almost a breath away from a great move of God. It may be compared to the text in 1 Kings 18 where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal. There seems to be a lot of ‘Baals’ around us in this day and hour where so much evil is glorified. It’s hard to believe some of the things we and our children and grandchildren see on TV, let alone in the newscasts or movie theatres. Certainly gone are the days when I grew up in the public school system, and we not only said the Pledge of Allegiance with the phrase, “…under God”… but also recited the Lord’s prayer before beginning the school day. Oh how far we have spiraled downward since then! We need a great and massive outpouring of the Holy Spirit as on the Day of Pentecost when thousands came into the kingdom of God day by day! Is this your heart’s desire?
The two winds of Elijah
In this passage of 1 Kings we see this mighty man of God, Elijah, standing his ground against the evil of his day. He did not cower. He confidently experienced two different kinds of wind that we too must engage in. One was extremely forceful, one was very gentle. Let’s look at the forceful one first.
In chapter 18, a mighty miracle was about to take place as he confronted the evil before him. He had great confidence in the power of God who resided in his soul. We must have this same kind of confidence when faced with evil within our spheres of influence. Do not be afraid! Move onward and upward, and through every trial be confident that ‘greater is He who is in you, than he that is in the world.’ [1 John 4:4]
Elijah’s winds of change were coming! And the first one was a contest between good and evil. So he began to pray: “O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your Word. Answer me, O Lord, answer me that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, ‘The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.” Shortly thereafter, Elijah crouches down near the ground and declares that an imminent heavy shower is coming. It came alright, and this prophet had such a powerful Presence of God upon him that he literally outran Ahab’s chariot to Jezreel! Think of what that may have looked like. I can just see this man running wildly in great excitement and joy! I’m sure he even surprised himself at the power of God that was upon him. But this same power and anointing is available to every one of us who cry out to God for more of Him.
How many of us want to know the God of Elijah to this extent? How many of us are crying out for an incredible wind of the Holy Spirit to engulf our cities, states and all across the globe?! Truly we are nearing that very hour if we would but pray and believe as did Elijah! This is for any one of us who are believers in the Lord Jesus. The same spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in us and we can call upon this kind of powerful wind just like this mighty prophet. Let us begin to cry out for this wind in greater measure than we’ve ever known in our lifetimes. Oh, do you hear the sound of the winds blowing in your spirit?! It’s so close!
The second wind
The second wind the prophet Elijah experienced is in I Kings 19 where again, so much happens by the power of God. He lays down to rest and an angel touches him, biding him to eat some food – prepared no less, by the angel himself! Such great food was this, that Elijah went 40 days and 40 nights on that food alone!
The question here is, “How many of us have fasted?” This spiritual tool always reaps great rewards as you can see from this passage. If you haven’t done much fasting, now may be the time to do so. Pray and ask the Lord what kind of fast you should do, as there are various ways and times to consider. Some may fast from food one day a week, 7 days, 21 days, or even 40 days. Others may fast from soda drinks, coffee, desserts, snacks, or certain pleasures such as just watching TV, etc. There are great rewards to fasting and denying oneself of certain pleasures. The Lord sees. The Lord knows. The Lord rewards! Remember the Lord Jesus’ own fasting for 40 days in the desert after He was baptized by John? [Matt. 4] He emerged from that time with great power and anointing. The same can happen for us! There’s just something about denying the flesh that invites the divine that will have a much greater impact in our lives. I’ve engage in this many times and have been amazed at how much more intimate my spiritual life grows during these precious ordained times of fasting and concerted prayer.
Looking through verses 11 through the end of this chapter, Elijah encounters the very powerful Presence of God through a strong wind that was breaking up the rocks on the mountain, then an earthquake, then a fire, then… the sound of a ‘gentle blowing.’ This is God’s soft and tender, yet powerful Voice coming to him through this ‘gentle blowing’… I see it almost as a sweet caress from the Lord’s Divine Breath that touches the prophet’s very heart and soul deep within. Elijah laments to the Lord that he alone is left to minister God’s Word. How many of us have felt like this and thought we’re all alone and that no one understands us? But always remember, God sees. God knows. God understands. We are never alone. In fact, we belong to the biggest family in the world, the family of God!
Picking up the mantle/baton
It’s at this time that the Lord gives Elijah the instruction to anoint yet another prophet, Elisha, who will pick up Elijah’s mantle as the Lord begins to prepare Elijah for the chariot of fire that will take him to his heavenly home. Wow! Let’s all aspire to pick up the mantles of those who have gone before us.
My precious friends, I sense that many of the evangelistic and healing anointings of past men and women of God are now beginning to fall once again upon those who are running hard after the Lord. It’s a new day, a new hour, a new calling upon the Body of Christ to pick up the mantles of John G. Lake, John Alexander Dowie, William Branham, Kathryn Kuhlman, Aimee Semple McPherson, Maria Woodworth Etter, Smith Wigglesworth, and many others. It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are. Remember Daniel and his young friends in the book named after him, or young David killing Goliath, or Joshua exclaiming in the book named after him in 14:10d-11, “… and now behold, I am eighty-five years old today. I am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for ward and for going out and coming in.”
Precious believers, if our wonderful Lord can use a 90 year old Sarah and a 99 year old Abraham to birth something utterly impossible, He can certainly use anyone of us, young or old to do the same. Age doesn’t matter to God Almighty. NOW is the time to step out and declare Genesis 18:14, “Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” This was the statement by the angel of the Lord when Sarah laughed at God’s prophecy of her having a baby in her very advanced old age. I think I probably would laugh too! Nevertheless, we serve an Almighty everlasting God who can do way above or beyond what we could ever imagine or think. Let’s take that statement from the Lord to the bank of heaven and cash it in! Let’s see what mighty works the Lord will unfurl through this strategic time in our lives according to Ephesians 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.” [My emphasis]
On August 4th, 1996 I had a dramatic encounter with the Lord as He instructed me to ask Him for 500,000 new souls for my state of Iowa alone. I was astounded to say the least. But I can tell you, I don’t doubt for a moment that He can do ‘far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think,’ and I THINK BIG! I THINK IMPOSSIBLE THINGS. I THINK AS A CHILD THAT MY PAPA ABBA CAN DO EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS HE WILL DO! It’s time to go for it! Let go and let God. Let go of all your preconceived ideas of what revival looks like. The Lord has a plan for each one of us, and if we’re listening, and if we’re willing, He will use each one of us to usher in one of the greatest harvest of souls this world has ever known. We are on the precipice of it! Prepare. Prepare the way of the Lord!
As a CHILD of God, I have a big imagination and enormous desires in my heart to see this harvest of souls…those being born again, and those hurt in mind, body and spirit being healed as they come into His magnificent Presence, power and glory! Something of a great magnitude is about to be released with wave upon wave of God’s glory splashing over many people in many places. Let’s get ready. Let’s position ourselves in diligent prayer, fasting, and loving people more than ever right where they are because the Lord wants to touch them, save them, deliver them, heal them, and send them out to the far ends of the earth.
Winds of change are blowing. And just as Iowa broke a record high temperature for this time of year, so too we are about to break records for this coming revival! Are you prepared?
